HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. — Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Henderson County Courthouse on Sept. 15 to remember Charlie Kirk, Asheville television station WLOS (News 13) reported on Sept, 16.
Kirk, the founder of the conservative youth activist organization Turning Point USA, was assassinated during a campus event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.
At the Sept. 15 vigil, mourners prayed, sang and lighted candles in honor of Kirk's memory.
Cher Silvius, the event organizer, who was on vacation when she heard about Kirk's death, but felt moved to hold the vigil, told News 13, "He (Kirk) was a man who believed in free speech for all people. He believed that people should dialogue — have discussions. The way we find peace is through conversation with people, and that was his heart."
Kirk’s Sept. 21 funeral was held at State Farm Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona, and was attended by President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and other top government officials, along with Elon Musk, and countless other Kirk enthusiasts.
During the nearly five-hour memorial, Trump spoke for 46 minutes, hailing Kirk “as a martyr for American freedom.”
Also, Trump vowed to carry on Kirk’s work, while again accusing what he called the “radical left” for Kirk’s murder, Reuters reported on Sept. 22.
