Sunday, 19 April 2026 22:41

From Staff Reports

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The permanent removal of several I-26/I-240 ramps in Asheville, starting in April], is a key component of the long-delayed, $1.14 billion I-26 Connector project, AI Overview stated on April 13

The closures — specifically impacting Riverside Drive, Hill Street, and Patton Avenue — are designed to facilitate the construction of a new, safer traffic pattern, reduce congestion, and accommodate massive infrastructure changes, such as new bridges over the French Broad River.

The following closures will be permanent:

• Riverside Drive entrance ramp to I-240/I-26 (East): Closed April 16, with traffic rerouted via Broadway Street.

• I-240/I-26 (West) off-ramp to Hill Street: Closed April 17, with traffic directed to use Exit 25 (Broadway Street).

• Patton Avenue eastbound ramp to Westgate Bridge: Scheduled for closure in early May.
