EDNEYVILLE, N..C. — The Catalinas, an iconic Carolina beach music group, will perform music for listening and/or dancing at 7 p.m. July 18 at Point Lookout Vineyards, 408 Appleola Road, in Hendersonville’s Edneyville community.
The Catalinas, which have gone through many lineup changes through the years, “are highly significant for pioneering and sustaining the distinctively Southern ‘beach music’ genre — a melodic, danceable style heavily tied to R&B, shag dancing, and coastal culture,” AI Overview stated.
Following is a summary of the key significance and legacy of the Catalinas:
• Genre-defining anthem: The band’s 1975 signature hit, “Summertime’s Calling Me,” remains one of the most iconic songs in beach music history. For many fans, the track is considered the ultimate genesis of the beach music sound.
• Hall of Fame Inductees: The group’s enduring impact on the regional music scene and extensive touring earned them a 1995 induction into the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame and a 2013 induction into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.
• Decades of longevity: The band has played thousands of live performances over the decades and kept the genre alive during the height of the rock ‘n’ roll boom in the late 1960s and ‘70s.”
Among the Catalinas’ other hits are classics, such as “You Haven’t The Right,” “Facts of Love” and “Dancin’-Romancin’,”
