Former Rep. Cawthorn charged with failure to appear in court in suspended license case in Fla.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Former U.S. Representative Madison Cawthorn, who represented District 11 in Western North Carolina, was arrested in Florida on Sept. 10 for failing to appear in court, Asheville, N.C., television station WLOS (News 13) reported on Sept. 11, citing online records as its news source.

“Cawthorn was taken into custody on Wednesday (Sept. 10) and released just over an hour later on a $2,000 bond, according to online records from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office,” News 13 added.

The Asheville, N.C., native who was raised and homeschooled in Hendersonville, N.C., is accused of missing a court date related to a charge of driving while his license was suspended or revoked in Collier County..

“The arrest comes amid recent speculation the former lawmaker is planning a return to politics, with reports that he is exploring a run for Florida’s District 19 seat,” News 13 noted.
