MAGGIE VALLEY — John Mark Evans, 44, of Maggie Valley recently was charged in connection to a fire that erupted on Dec 27 at Stompin’ Ground dance hall — an iconic landmark in Maggie Valley.

Specifically, Evans was charged later Dec. 27 with arson-burning of an unoccupied commercial structure, according to Maggie Valley Police Chief Matt Boger.

The suspect is being held on a $150,000 bond.

Regarding the incident, the Waynesville News reported on Dec. 28 that “Stompin’ Ground, a popular gathering spot in Maggie Valley, suffered significant damage in the fire, but fortunately, the dance hall and trophy room were spared.

“The owners of the Stompin Grounds, Burton and Caroline Edwards, have announced plans to rebuild and restore the business. The community has rallied around the family, offering support and encouragement as they navigate this challenging time. “

The blaze at Stompin’ Ground was reported around 2:22 p.m. Dec. 27, Maggie Valley officials noted.

A joint press release on the incident from the Maggie Valley Police Department and Maggie Valley Fire and Rescue reported the following:

“On December 27, 2024, at approximately 14:22, Maggie Valley Fire and Rescue along with mutual aid were alerted to a commercial structure fire at 3116 Soco Road, Maggie Valley, N.C., at the ‘Stompin’ Ground’ location.

“Engine 17 arrived on scene to find a working fire at the front of the building. Fire crews acted swiftly, extinguishing the flames with minimal extension into the building.

“The fire is believed to have been caused by arson. Maggie Valley Police Department is currently leading the investigation, working alongside the Haywood County Fire Marshal and state authorities. A person of interest has been identified, and authorities believe this to be an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the community.

"The fire was quickly brought under control, and the safety of both responders and the community remains the primary concern.”
