From Staff Reports

FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. — The electric car company Tesla will open a regional distribution center in Fountain Inn sometime this year, Tesla announced on Jan. 18.

The center reportedly will be Tesla’s largest investment in South Carolina.

Fountain Inn, an Upstate city (about 30 miles southeast of Greenville) with a population of 10,416 in the 2020 census, bills itself as “the diamond tip of the Golden Strip.” Regarding the area known as “the Golden Strip,” Wikipedia stated,
“The Golden Strip’ is an informal collective title for the South Carolina cities of Fountain Inn, Simpsonville and Mauldin, which stretch along Interstate 385 in Greenville County, south of the city of Greenville.... Historically, the term was used because of new water installments added to the three cities.” However, Wikipedia added, now, “the area is often characterized today with its fast-paced economic growth.”

Meanwhile, in its announcement, Tesla noted that its 251,100-square-foot facility in Fountain Inn will focus on distributing vehicle parts regionally. Manufacturing will not be included at the new center, located within the Fox Hill Business Park.

Total investment and the number of jobs included had not been made public, as of the Daily Planet’s deadline for this edition.

“We are excited that Tesla has chosen to call Fountain Inn home for their first facility in South Carolina,” said Fountain Inn Mayor G.P. McLeer. “This facility will not only create local jobs that will support families, but it also helps many of our region’s existing suppliers get their products to one of the nation’s most innovative automotive companies more efficiently.”

South Carolinians cannot yet purchase a Tesla without traveling to a nearby state because of state laws prohibiting car manufacturers from selling to consumers directly without a physical car dealership.
