Monday, 15 November 2021 12:16

From Staff Reports

CLYDE — John Hemingway, a corporal in the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office, recently announced he will run for the Haywood sheriff job in 2022.

Hemingway is also a business-owner, instructor and member of the Town of Clyde Board of Aldermen.

He is the second Democratic candidate to announce a run for sheriff in 2022.

As of the Daily Planet’s press deadline early Nov. 11, Hemingway will be facing Larry Bryson in the March Democratic primary, while Sheriff’s Office Capt. Tony Cope will face Bill Wilke, a private investigator and former lieutenant at the Asheville Police Department, in the Republican primary.

Sheriff Greg Christopher has said he will not be seeking re-election. The filing deadline — for candidates who want to run in the March 2022 primary election — opens Dec. 6 and ends Dec. 17.
