From Staff Reports

HENDERSONVILLE — The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office said it will not charge U.S Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-Hendersonville, for having a knife at a school board meeting, Asheville television station WLOS (News 13) reported on Sept. 16.

“Cawthorn attended the meeting at the Henderson County Public Schools Administrative Office building on the night of Sept. 13 to speak out against the district’s mask mandate for students and staff,” News 13 noted.

“The school system asked the sheriff’s office to investigate after allegations surfaced on Sept. 14 that Cawthorn had a knife in his possession at the meeting. However, the sheriff’s office would not say whether or not Cawthorn had a knife.”

In a prepared statement, the sheriff’s office said the following:

“Although unacceptable, occasionally a person inadvertently possesses a knife on educational property or other property where such possession is prohibited. During such an encounter, such as a sporting event, it is not uncommon for a HCSO Deputy Sheriff to issue a verbal warning and have the knife and or person removed from the premises.”

Democrat Jay Carey, who plans to run against Cawthorn, posted photos on social media showing what he said was the knife under the congressman’s wheelchair.

“When asked specifically whether or not Cawthorn had a knife at the meeting, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office PIO Johnny Duncan said, ‘The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office will have no further comment regarding this incident,’” News 13 reported.

“The sheriff’s office said the Henderson County Public Schools Administrative Office building has now been clearly marked as an educational facility which prohibits weapons on or in the property at all times.

The statement from the sheriff’s office also noted the following:

“Congressman Cawthorn is now aware that the administrative offices of the school system is considered educational property and NO WEAPONS are allowed.”

Attempts to reach Cawthorn for a comment have been unsuccessful, News 13 noted, adding, “This incident follows an incident earlier this year in which the congressman tried to go through security at Asheville Regional Airport with a gun in his carry-on bag. At the time, Cawthorn’s office said he mistakenly put the weapon in his bag.”

In response to what Carey termed “this blatant violation of the law,” the candidate issued the following statement:

“This is just another example of a long list of behavior that makes Madison Cawthorn unfit for office. There were children at this meeting, and any one of them could have accessed Cawthorn’s weapon without his knowledge. This was a blatant violation of the law,  and when I informed local law enforcement that the congressman was armed, I was shrugged off.

“No one is above the law, and that includes members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans. Madison Cawthorn was a party to the domestic insurrection on January 6th, and we must hold him accountable when he breaks the law and keep his behavior in check.”
