The Daily Planet’s Opinion: NFL kicker deserves praise (not cancelation) for expressing beliefs in commencement speech
Saturday, 08 June 2024 16:30

In the aftermath of widespread condemnation from the “woke” community, we are pleased to read that Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has expressed having no regrets about sharing his beliefs in a May 24 commencement speech.

“The Chiefs kicker is outspoken about his Catholic faith, his pro-life convictions and his devotion to the Traditional Latin Mass,” accordng to the Catholic News Agency.

In a May 25 story. Butker was quoted by The Associated Press as saying that he has received support — as well as “a shocking level of hate” about the views he expressed in his speech.

The so-called controversial comments by Butker, 28, were made during a May 11 commencement speech at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. (Benedictine College is a Catholic liberal arts college.)

In his now-infamous speech (at least among the “woke”-sters), Butker said most women receiving degrees were probably more excited about getting married and having kids.

In other politically inccorrect assertions, Butker:

• Argued that some Catholic leaders were “pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America.”

• Referred to a “deadly sin sort of pride that has a month dedicated to it” in an oblique reference to Pride month

• Took aim at President Joe Biden’s policies, including his condemnation of the Supreme Court’s reversal of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

Whether one agrees with Butker’s opinions and faith, we think most Americans surely would agree that he has the right to express himself in a commencement speech — and that those who hear his message are smart enought to think for themselves as to whether his ideas have merit.

Also, we urge those who value free speech to be gutsy enough to say so.
