The Candid Conservative: Get real, conservatives!
Friday, 16 October 2020 22:03
“The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; the second is war. Both bring a temporary prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunists.”
 — Ernest Hemingway

Special to the Daily Planet

Today’s America is overrun with political scam artists masquerading as something more virtuous.

Whether it’s biased local journalists, elitist fake Republicans or dogmatic progressive-liberal-socialists, the nurturing voice of wisdom is relentlessly under their acidic assault.

One manifestation of this slide is the systemic distortion of authentic conservative values. Why would anyone do that? Largely because the root word of conservative – Conserve [v. kuh n-surv] to use or manage wisely; preserve; save – gets in their way.

With your permission, I’d like to pop a few bubbles and counter the con.

Smart people count to three

Those working hard to upend our country’s connection to normalcy are numerically impaired. They can only count to two.

From the left’s perspective there are only two American political views – their view and the wrong view. Examples? Listen to liberal apologists on abortion – you either support it or hate women. These creatively constricted pretenders similarly approach our racial divide – you either support BLM or you’re a racist.

Conservative mamas read “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” to us as children and we can count to three. We understand that the left’s porridge is “too hot,” fascism’s porridge is “too cold” and that conservatism’s porridge is “just right.”

We have good company. It’s in that place we find the values of the greatest generation, statesman like Winston Churchill and John Kennedy, and – as of this tenuous moment – a majority of Americans.

Conservative thinkers believe we can like women and still suggest that 65 million intercepted new lives in not a positive solution to a complex social issue. Conservatives believe we can rightfully challenge BLM as a divisive nihilistic Marxist front and still care about and wish to uplift people regardless of their color.

Conservatism 101

A whole lot of people calling themselves conservative really aren’t. One can have conservative leanings and still be pretty mixed up. An example might be social, economic, spiritual or philosophical conservatives who apply conservative thinking to their main interest and otherwise discard it.

For those attempting to stay real, there are ten conservative agendas that color our flag:

(1) Being careful with other people’s money, property and liberty.

(2) Keeping government small and people big.

(3) Standing for something people can count on and borrowing from the hard-won wisdom of history.

(4) Assessing our fellow man on the basis of character, choices, convictions and culture – not color.

(5) Avoiding foreign entanglements and endless wars and making sure we have the resources to fight with when we can’t.

(6) Relentlessly supporting the rule of law over the rule of convenience or power.

(7) Upholding the sanity of the seven virtues over the destructive impacts of the seven deadly sins.

(8) Embracing the Constitution and jealously guarding the rights of free speech, religious liberty and protecting one’s self.

(9) Avoiding debt as an addictive phenomenon.

(10) Recognizing that a country without sound values and firm borders ceases to be a country.

As a bonus, we also get that America’s success equation – Liberty + Opportunity + Responsibility = Prosperity – doesn’t work if parts are removed.

Sorry to rain on anyone’s parade, but if you’re a real conservative, you at least make a stab at reaching for these priorities. If you do, you’ll understand why our club is losing members. Being a conservative – like anything else that is sound, reasoned and good – is hard. People today are increasingly resistant to anything that’s hard.

Conservative pretenders

You may have noticed the parade of state and national Republicans who’ve come out in support of Joe Biden. That list includes locals like former N.C. Supreme Court Associate Justice Bob Orr and Transylvania County Commission Chair Mike Hawkins and national figures like Cindy McCain, Colin Powell, Carly Fiorina and John Kasich.

Most of these folks define themselves as conservatives. Sorry guys, that’s nonsense. You can’t ignore the principles of conservatism, support the ultra-anticonservative values of Biden, and be real.

It’s likely these folks tripped on something known as the “Dunning-Kruger Effect.” That’s a condition whereby people think they’re smarter than they are and others are dumber than they are.

Sound familiar?

Where to land

It all comes down to this – what you practice is what you become. One can’t be a Christian without a hand on the Bible. One can’t be a physician without learning from good medical texts. One can’t be a conservative without embracing conservatism’s guiding principles.

Conservatives get real by walking their talk. That mean’s voting for candidates who uphold conservative values. Here’s a hint – they’re infinitely more likely to be riding an elephant than a donkey….
