The Daily Planet's Opinion: Thank you, to farmers, for effort to keep us fed
Tuesday, 15 September 2020 11:27

Contrary to the recent criticism of farmers voiced by the lead doctor at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville, we feel totally the reverse ... that farmers — locally and nationwide — are deserving of much praise for their efforts to keep the agricultural supply chain fairly steady, thereby keeping most Americans from going hungry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To our shock, Dr. Scott Donaldson, lead doctor at Pardee Hospital, on Aug. 26 recorded a video and posted it on YouTube in which he said he just came from Flavor First Farms in nearby Mills River, where President Donald Trump had spoken. Donaldson then called farmers “white, fat, and never worked a day in their Iife.”

We commend Pardee UNC Health Care’s statement in response:

“We are aware of the video posted by Dr. Donaldson yesterday. The video represents his opinion and does not represent the opinions, comments or beliefs of Pardee UNC Health Care. We are disappointed and embarrassed that Dr. Donaldson chose to share his views in such a way that offended so many within our community who we care for.

“We support and applaud all of our local farmers and their workforce and especially appreciate the hard work that they put into bringing food to our tables and the tables of many across our country.”

Indeed, we firmly believe farmers, who we know to be among the hardest-working Americans AND people of fine character, deserve our appreciation and encouragement.
