Four camdidates were elected Nov. 5 to seats on the Buncombe County Board of Education.
In the battle for the at-large seat, Democrat newcomer Charles Martin won with 51,377 votes, or 51.01 percent, while GOP incombent Glenda P. Weinert won 34,551 votes, or 34.3 percent.
With his resounding victory, Martin will be the first black member of the Buncombe school board.
In the District 1 race, the winner was current chair and Democrat Ann B. Franklin, who won 11,530 votes, or 61.96 percent, while Republican Greg Parks garnered 7,010 votes, or 37.67 percent.
In the District 2, Democrat Greg Cheatham won with 7,063 votes, or 38.99 percent, while unaffiliated candidate Nancy Shook Hargrove received 5,649 votes, or 31.18 percent.
There was no election for District 3.
In the District 4 race, former Republican Amy Churchill triumphed with 10,890 votes, or 61.5 percent; while Republican Jim Fulton netted 6,738 votes, or 38.05 percent.
