Cawthorn resignation urged by group in 3-billboard attack around Asheville
Monday, 15 February 2021 11:26

From Staff Reports

A group led by former Trump administration staffers and anti-Trump Republicans have put up billboards calling for the resignation of Western North Carolina Congressman Madison Cawthorn, linking his statements about the election to the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.

“You lied about the election. The capital was attacked. Cawthorn: Resign,” say the three billboards placed in and around Asheville.

Contacted about the billboards by the Daily Planet on Feb. 10, Cawthorn’s director of communications, Micah Bock, responded conferred with the congressman and then released the following statement

“Rep. Cawthorn is disappointed to hear that local Democrats are once again funneling dark money, from outside sources, into NC-11.”

Cawthorn’s statement to the Daily Planet continued as follows:

“The Republican Accountability project is an affiliate of “Defending Democracy Together,” which is a 501(c)(4) organization that spent $11.5 million dollars electing Joe Biden.

“The Republican Accountability Project is a front for the Democrat media machine, and are one of the top ‘dark money’ groups in the 2020 election cycle according to election financing watchdog, Open Secrets.

“Rep. Cawthorn will continue to work hard for the people of his district, and will continue to fulfill his promises of only representing their interests, not the interests of some D.C. lobbying group.”

The Republican Accountability Project — targeting 11 legislators (including Cawthorn) — is a group led by former Ronald Reagan staffer Bill Kristol, ex-Donald Trump senior advisor Elizabeth Neumann and others.

The Asheville-area billboards are located on Sweeten Creek Road, along I-26 near the Airport Road exit and along I-26 near the Asheville Outlets exit.

Similar billboards have been erected in the districts of U.S. Senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Josh Hawley of Missouri and U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.
