Homeward Bound unveils plan to buy Days Inn to house homeless
Monday, 15 February 2021 11:25

From Staff Reports

The Days Inn on Tunnel Road in East Asheville is being purchased by Homeward Bound of Asheville, which has plans to use the venue as housing for much of the local homeless population.

Estimates show that the former 85-room motel could provide housing to at least 85 people, following its conversion into efficiency apartments.

As of the Daily Planet’s Feb. 11 press deadline, the property was in a contract-to-purchase status, with a closing required by October at a cost reportedly ranging between $10 million and $12 million.

Services will be provided to those living at the former hotel through Homeward Bound’s partners, such as the City of Asheville, Sunrise Comunity Wellness & Recovery, Haywood Street Congregation and Appalachian Mountain Centers. Also health care services will be offered at the location by Homeward Bound.

In a statement on Feb. 3, Homeward Bound Executive Director Meredith Switzer said, "After years of studying our community need and operating a small permanent supportive housing residence, Homeward Bound has a housing solution that will provide stability, safety, and improved quality of life for 85 of our community’s most vulnerable homeless neighbors. We are calling it 'Home is Key.'"

Asheville has had a persistent homelessness problem, but the situation has grown more dire and visible during the COVID-19 pandemic.
