From Staff Reports

HENDERSONVILLE —  In an effort to boost downtown businesses, Hendersonville City Council voted June 4 to extend the weekend closure of Main Street — on a bi-monthly basis — through early August..

The three events will be held June 19-21, July 3-5 and July 31-Aug. 2.

“The success of the Open Streets trial held Memorial Day weekend prompted the council to continue the event through August, based on positive feedback from both consumers and merchants,” the Hendersonville Times-News reported in a June 4 story.

The vote followed Downtown Economic Development Director Lew Holloway’s presentation of the results of surveys taken by consumers and merchants.

The HT-N added that “consumer feedback was gathered through the survey and social media polls hosted by merchants and was overwhelmingly positive, according to Holloway. Many respondents called it ‘innovative,’ ‘awesome,’ ‘relaxing’ and ‘safe.’

“Most respondents did desire to see more use of the street itself, whether for more dining and retail space or to add a more festive atmosphere to the event.”

Holloway told council that  results from the social media polls indicated “an untapped interest in the event,” the HT-N reported. “Many people responded that they did nott attend the first street closure, but would do so in the future.

“Another survey taken by 40 businesses showed the majority of merchants thought the event was a success. Seventy-six percent said they would like to see the event happen again, while 18 percent did not,” the HT-N noted.
