Happy birthday, Ol’ Blue Eyes!

December 12th is a day to celebrate the 104th birthday of singer/actor/entertainer Frank Sinatra.

His music and acting are still with us and, as far as I am concerned, they’ll be here forever. Such is the power his talents left us with.

A toast and Happy Birthday to Ol’ Blue Eyes from me and an illustrious group of artists, including singer Peggy King and the All-Star Jazz Trio, author Will Friedland, Tony Bennett, Diane Krall, talent promoter Billy Jon Coogan, music archivist Anthony Di Florio III, WYYR program director Chris Valenti and singer/actress Jane Powell.

Indeed, his films, recordings and books written about this legendary performer will surely be with us forever and Sinatra will remain “A #1- Top Of The List,” likewise!

Gratitude expressed for coverage of Gandhi’s talk

hank you for your report on the recent visit of Arun Gandhi to Unity of the Blue Ridge (in Mills River).

I was unable to attend, so I am most appreciative of the comprehensive article in your November issue.

The “Truth Force” or “Satyagraha” taught and practiced by Mahatma Gandhi is a most powerful means of confronting injustice.

Such disciplined active nonviolence is an imperative in these times of endemic mendacity and rampant abuse of power by public officials.

Gandhi’s message is a reminder of our duty to withdraw cooperation with unjust systems and hone our skills in wielding the power of nonviolence in action.

Conservatives are wolves (with apologies to wolves)

Just read Mr. (Carl) Mumpower’s thoughtful comments on conservatives (in the Daily Planet).

He has a point. But he also misses a point.

Why are conservatives essentially all unified in promoting extensive and short-sighted extraction of our natural resources, dependence on fossil fuels, unrestrained commercial and luxury residential development, etc.?

I will use Mr. Mumpower’s own paradigm to answer. The rulers of the conservative coalition are not sheepdogs  They are wolves  (with apology to Canis Lupus and Rufus).

GOP accused of stealth in pushing survival of fittest

According to President (Donald) Trump and the national conservative news media, someone who simply supports a federal government social program that helps people — such as Social Security and Medicare — is a “crazy socialist.”

If we go by that definition, then that would make Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon “crazy socialists” because they both signed new federal government social programs into law/existence during their presidencies, and they both supported Social Security.

In fact, Ike wrote a letter to his brother in which he stated that any Republican who wants to abolish Social Security is “stupid.”

It appears that conservative-Republicans have become a lot more conservative and a lot more “stupid” since around 1980 because we sure do have a lot of them nowdays who stupidly want to abolish Social Security and move our country toward a “Survival-of-the-Fittest” Social Darwinism.

For example, I recently saw President Trump’s “acting chief of staff” and “hudget director,” Mick Mulvaney, on television. When he was a congressman, he was a favorite of the Tea Party and was well-known for arguing that Social Security is a “Ponzi scheme,” that it is “unconstitutional” and that it should be abolished.

Very few Americans seem to know that today’s national Republican Party, more and more, uses “stealth” tactics as it advocates for and stands for a creeping, crazy, and cold-hearted “Survival-of-the-Fittest” Social Darwinism in which all federal government social programs which help the lower and middle classes are abolished and no longer exist.
