From Staff Reports

A mural immortalizing singer Roberta Flack, a Black Mountain native, recently was painted on the side of the Black Mountain Brewing building off Broadway Avenue in Black Mountain.

Flack, who is famous for the 1970s classic “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” was born in Black Mountain in 1937 and lived there until she was nine years old.

The mural is part of artist Scott Nurkin’s N.C. Musicians Mural Project honoring the state’s trail-blazing natives. Nurklin also has painted murals in honor of other state natives, including Earl Scruggs and John Coltrane. The brewery raised $15,000 online to finance the Flack mural.
