From Staff Reports

HENDERSONVILLE — The Henderson County Board of Commissioners voted July 15 to endorse Asheville Regional Airport’s purchase of Broadmor Golf Links.

In June, when the commissioners first considered its position on the sale, they were urged by golfers to ensure that the golf course would continue to operate even if the property changed hands.

Property owner Warrier Custom Golf, which owns 15 courses, filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2019 and is trying to liquidate its assets.

Lewis Bleiweis, executive director of the airport, told the commissioners that Warrior had approached airport officials about the sale. “We had an opportunity to purchase the golf course,” Bleiweis was quoted as saying by the Hendersonville Lightning. “No one elese has stepped up to do it.”

Bleiweis also said airport officials want the land in order to protect the air space around the aiport and also to potentiall develop part of the land as a source of rental revenue. “About 163 acres of the 193-acre tract land is in the floodplain,” the Lightning reported on July 22. “The airport authority has considered marketing 20-30 acres of high ground for some kind of development.”

Bleiweis was quoted by the Lightning as saying, “We would lease it for development, but we will not sell any of the property.”

The Lightning also reported that “Commissioner Michael Edney said that the location would be ideal for a hotel-convention center.

“Bleiweis, who has talked with several companies interested in operating the course, said the airport authority is open to keeping the golf course in business. One option is for the Henderson County Parks & Recreation Department would run it under an agreement with the airport authority.”

Before making the motion to approve the sale, Commissioner Bill Lapsley was quoted by the Lightning as saying, “I’m encouraged by all the efforts to address the concerns that we raised (about preserving golf) and I’m satisfied they’re doing all that they can to keep that golf course open and operational.”
